WASHINGTON, July 13: A record-breaking heat wave baked the central United States on Sunday, smashing temperature records from the northern plains to the Rocky Mountains region. In Salt Lake City, the state capital of Utah, and Billings, the largest city in Montana, temperatures reached a peak of 109F (43C), according to preliminary data from the US National Weather Service. Both temperatures are all-time highs for each city since records started being kept over 150 years ago, surpassing the previous records of 107F and 108F (42C), respectively. — AP
13 killed as trucks ram wedding guests'

JAKARTA, July 13: At least 13 people have been killed after a pickup truck carrying wedding guests was crushed between two trucks on a highway on Indonesia's main island of Java. The crash occurred on Sunday near Kiajaran Kulon village in Indramayu regency as the group was returning home from a wedding in neighbouring Parean village, the Indian daily said, citing police. Local Traffic Police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat said the open-bed pickup had slowed and stopped near a median opening to make a U-turn when it was hit from behind by a wing-box truck travelling in the same direction.

S Korean court sentences ex-president

SEOUL, July 13: A South Korean court sentenced former President Yoon Suk Yeol to two years in prison on Monday after finding him guilty of illegally receiving opinion polling services worth 270 million won ($179,800) for free from a political broker, local media said. The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon violated political funding laws by receiving 14 rounds of polling from the political broker at no cost and later exercising influence over the nomination of a former lawmaker to repay him, according to the ruling. — Reuters
