KHARTOUM, May 20: Sudan's army rulers and protest leaders remained locked in talks early Monday to finalise a new governing body that would replace the generals who took power after ousting longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir last month. Armed group kills 11 in Brazil bar
BELEM, May 20: An armed group entered a bar in the Brazilian northern city of Belem on Sunday and fired at patrons, killing 11 people and leaving one wounded, according to local media reports. The armed group, whose members were wearing masks to cover their faces, arrived in cars and a motorbike before shooting dead six women and five men in the bar in a poor, violent neighbourhood in the capital of Para state, said G1 news website. — Reuters
Sweden requests detention order for Assange
COPENHAGEN, May 20: Swedish authorities on Monday issued a request for a detention order against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is now jailed in Britain, a Swedish prosecutor said. Prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson says if the Swedish court decided to detain Assange "on probable cause suspected for rape ... I will issue a European Arrest Warrant."

Four rebels die in southern Philippine clash
MANILA, May 20: Philippine security forces killed four New People's Army (NPA) rebels in an encounter Sunday afternoon in southern Surigao del Sur province, the military said on Monday. The military said the four were killed in a 10-minute "running gun battle" with at least 10 guerrillas in Cancavan, a village in Carmen town in Surigao del Sur. — Xinhua
47 migrants land in Italy despite ban
MILAN, May 20: Italy's hard-line interior minister is reacting with anger after migrants rescued by a humanitarian ship landed on Italy's southern island of Lampedusa despite his explicit ban. Matteo Salvini on Monday threatened charges against anyone who acted illegally to bring the 47 migrants to land. He said on Facebook if "there was a ploy to disembark the migrants, I will take action because that is aiding and abetting human trafficking."— AP
US envoy to China makes rare Tibet visit
BEIJING, May 20: US ambassador to China Terry Branstad is making a rare visit to Tibet to meet local officials and raise concerns about restrictions on Buddhism and the preservation of the Himalayan region's unique culture and language. The Embassy in Beijing said Branstad would visit the Tibetan Autonomous Region and neighboring Qinghai province from Sunday through Saturday. It said his visit would include official meetings along with visits to religious and cultural heritage sites, schools, and "other places of interest." — AP
Malawi police detain pvt jet for vote fraud
Lilongwe, May 20: The Malawi police detained a private jet landing at the country's Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) here on Sunday, due to 'suspicious behaviours' described by the authorities, local media reported. The ZS-SDS aircraft owned by South-African air consultant Fair Aviation had landed at the airport on Friday, then flying to Malawi's northern city of Mzuzu and Likoma Island in Lake Malawi, said James Kadadzera, spokesman for the Malawi Police Service, adding the plane returned to Malawi's capital Lilongwe along the same route later in that day. — Xinhua
