Shooting at US mall

sparks panic

NEW YORK, Nov 24: A man was shot in the wrist after a fight at a crowded New Jersey mall on Black Friday, police said, sparking panic on the busiest shopping day of the year. It was not immediately clear what the motive behind the shooting was as the victim was refusing to cooperate, but the gunshot led to the evacuation of the Jersey Gardens mall as police converged on the scene. Videos posted on social media showed shoppers taking cover, while others were being urged to "get down." Some took to Twitter to say they thought they were under attack by an active shooter. — AFP

Rain helps douse California fire

PARADISE, Nov 24: A deadly wildfire is nearly contained thanks to several days of rain in Northern California. But search crews are still completing the meticulous task of combing through ash and debris that are now damp and muddy. Searchers planned to resume their grim task on Saturday after working on-and-off the day before because of a downpour over Paradise, California. Some are now looking through destroyed neighborhoods for a second time as hundreds of people remain unaccounted for. — AP

Haitians furiously protest graft

PÉTION-VILLE, Nov 24: Thousands of Haitians took to the streets of Port-au-Prince on Friday in the latest display of public fury at the government over rampant corruption, economic malaise and other grievances. Chanting anti-government slogans, the protesters, most walking but some riding in phalanxes of motorcycles, converged on the affluent suburb of Pétion-Ville but were mostly stopped by riot police officers whose armoured vehicles blocked the road. — The New York Times

Nigeria's military acknowledges

major attack by extremists

JOHANNESBURG, Nov 24: Nigeria's military is acknowledging a major attack against it by Islamic extremists after opposition lawmakers said 44 soldiers were killed. The statement issued overnight doesn't say how many are dead after the Nov. 18 attack in Metele in the northeast. Nigeria is often reluctant to expose the toll of such attacks by Boko Haram extremists and fighters linked to the Islamic State group. — AP

Kenya identifies suspects in

Italian woman's kidnapping

NAIROBY, Nov 24: Kenyan police have identified three suspects in the kidnapping of an Italian woman and are offering a reward of one million shillings ($9,750) for information leading to their arrest. There has been no claim of responsibility for the first kidnapping of a foreigner in the East African nation in several years. Police have said they are optimistic the aid worker will be found "within the shortest time possible." — AP

Iran urges Muslim unity

against 'hostile' US, Israel

TEHRAN, Nov 24: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday called for Muslim unity and resistance against what he called "hostile" policies of the United States and Israel.
