Journo found stabbed to death in Mexico

TOLUCA, Aug 25: The head of a Mexican news website was found stabbed to death in the center of the country, authorities said Saturday, the 10th such killing this year. The body of Nevith Condes Jaramillo "was found Saturday morning… showing injuries from a sharp object," the state prosecutor said in a statement. — AFP

Nauru president loses seat in election

WELLINGTON, Aug 25: Nauru's president, a strong supporter of Australia's hardline policy of detaining refugees on the tiny Pacific island nation, has lost his seat in a general election, official results showed Sunday. Voters went to the polls on Saturday and selected two rival candidates over Baron Waqa in his electorate of Boe, results revealed, ending the 59-year-old's six years in office. His successor will not be known until the 19-member parliament meets to choose a new president, although finance minister David Adeang will be considered a favourite if he is re-elected. — AFP

Seven adults shot at birthday party in Maryland

CAMP SPRINGS, Aug 25: A Maryland police chief says seven adults were injured when shots were fired at a child's birthday party a few miles southeast of the nation's capital. Prince George's County police Cpl. Nicholas Clayton tells The AP that the shooting occurred Saturday night near the Camp Springs and Morningside areas. The chief didn't release information about the suspect. — AP

Three killed in Libya airstrike

TRIPOLI, Aug 25: Three civilians were killed on Saturday in an airstrike in the south of the Libyan capital of Tripoli, a military source said. "An airstrike targeted the highway linking Karimiya with Sawani in southern Tripoli, killing three civilians in a car headed toward downtown Tripoli," a source of the UN-backed government forces said. — Xinhua.

4 die as plane crashes in Ecuador's Amazon region

QUITO, Aug 25: A Cessna 182 airplane crashed in Ecuador's Amazon region, killing all four people aboard, authorities said Saturday. The plane was carrying a pilot and three passengers, the civil aviation authority said. The cause of the crash was not immediately known but an investigation has been launched. — AFP

NASA investigates first crime committed in space

WASHINGTON, Aug 25: US space agency NASA is investigating what may be the first crime committed in outer space, The New York Times reported Saturday. Astronaut Anne McClain is accused of identity theft and improperly accessing her estranged wife's private financial records. — AFP
