Babies' remains found dumped in Kolkata

Kolkata, Sept 02: Police in Kolkata (Calcutta) are investigating after the bodies of 14 babies and foetuses were found wrapped in plastic bags during construction work. Local media said the remains were found on Sunday when workers dug up a vacant plot of land in the Haridevpur neighbourhood. A real estate company had bought the land recently, the Hindustan Times said. It is not yet clear what happened. — BBC

Thai flood affects over 78,000 people

BANGKOK, Sept 02: The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department of Thailand said over 78,000 people were still affected by the floods caused by tropical storm Bebinca and southwest monsoon. The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said on late Saturday that 162,711 people from 55,353 families in 2,318 villages from 18 provinces have been affected by the flooding since Aug 17. Director-General of the department Chayapol Thitisak said floodwaters have subsided in 10 of the 18 provinces hit by the floods, leaving 78,334 people from 30,773 families in eight provinces still affected by floods. — Xinhua

Chinese police detain 46 people at education protest

LEIYANG, Sept 02: Chinese police on Sunday said it has detained 46 people in Leiyang city after bottles, bricks and firecrackers were thrown at officers and government officials during a 600-strong protest against problems in the education system. They disturbing public order and damaging police facilities during the protest on Saturday. — Reuters
