Iran unveils home-made anti-armour missiles

TEHRAN, Jan 30: Iran unveiled two indigenous anti-armour missiles on Wednesday, Tasnim news agency reported. The two missiles, Toofan-3M and Toofan-7, were put on display at an exhibition of achievements of the Iranian Armed Forces. Both are top attack projectiles that strike armored vehicles from above, Tasnim said.They detect the target with electromagnetic and laser sensors and detonate their warhead at the top of the target. — Xinhua

Spain detains around 50 in anti-drugs move

MADRID, Jan 30: The Spanish National Police force have made a series of arrests while seizing a large quantity of drugs in an operation carried out in the southwest of Spain. The police confirm that the Operation Lupita was carried out in an area known as the 'Campo de Gibraltar' close to Gibraltar and the cities of Algeciras and La Linea de la Concepcion. The operation involving around 200 agents is expected to conclude with around 50 arrests, while it is reported that police seized 14 tons of hashish in various stages of preparation. — Xinhua

German police nab three suspected of planning attack

BERLIN, Jan 30: German news site Spiegel Online reports that police have arrested three men on suspicion of planning to carry out a bomb attack. The site reported that the three Iraqis were arrested early Wednesday around Dithmarschen, in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein. A spokeswoman for Germany's federal police, Daniela Kiss, confirmed that officers were involved in an operation together with state police, but referred to federal prosecutors for further details. — AP

Bangkok schools closed for air pollution

BANGKOK, Jan 30: More than 400 schools in Thailand's capital, Bangkok, have been shut as several weeks of dangerously unhealthy air pollution causes increasing concern. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha directed Bangkok's governor to order the closure of 437 schools from noon Wednesday through the end of the week after officials said the pollution would continue until next Monday. They said still air and heavy traffic are causing a buildup of particles in the air. — AP

Egypt arrests activists after commemoration of uprising

CAIRO, Jan 30: An Egyptian rights lawyer says security forces have arrested at least six activists in a crackdown coinciding with the anniversary of the 2011 uprising. Negad Borai says on Wednesday that among those arrested in the past two days is Yehia Hussein Abdel Hady, the former spokesman of the Civil Democratic Movement. The coalition of secular and left-leaning political parties had called for a boycott of Egypt's presidential election last year. — AP
