PRAGUE, Feb 04: Wintry weather causes major disruption in Czech Republic, leaving about 30,000 homes without power. Heavy snow has caused major disruption in the Czech Republic, leaving approximately 30,000 homes without power. Up to 20cm of fresh snow was reported in some locations, forcing highways to close and disrupting flights into and out of Vaclav Havel, Prague's international airport. Protesters across Russia rally against taking Moscow trash

MOSCOW, Feb 04: Protesters have rallied in more than a dozen Russian cities and towns against waste management plans that foresee Moscow sending its trash to poorer - and often pristine - northern areas. The protests Sunday ranged from a few dozen people up to 1,000 in regions from northwest Russia to Siberia. The biggest rallies were held in the Arkhangelsk region, north of Moscow on the White Sea, protesting plans by authorities to accept trash from Moscow. — AP

Pakistan orders probe into death of activist during clashes

QUETTA, Feb 04: Pakistan has ordered an investigation into the death of a prominent Pashtun rights activist following a weekend sit-in that dissolved into clashes with police. Friends and family of Arman Loni accuse the police of intentionally targeting and killing him. Loni was a leader in the Pashtun Protection Movement, which campaigns against perceived high-handedness by the security forces against the Pashtun minority. — AP

Millions join India's religious festival

ALLAHABAD, Feb 04: Millions of Hindu pilgrims took the plunge into sacred rivers at the world's largest religious gathering Monday, led by ash-smeared holy men and accompanied by religious chanting. On the most auspicious day of the months-long Kumbh Mela festival, devotees rose at dawn in the northern city of Allahabad to immerse themselves at the confluence of three rivers - the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. — AFP

UAE gives Pope warm welcome

ABU DHABI, Feb 04: Pope Francis received a grandiose, pomp-filled welcome on Monday as he opened his historic visit to the Arabian Peninsula with a meeting with Emirati leaders ahead of an address to faith leaders gathered in a Muslim region known for its restrictions on religious freedom. Francis arrived at the Abu Dhabi presidential palace in a simple Kia hatchback, but was greeted with an artillery salute and military flyover by a country now at war. — AP

Syria to evacuate 4,000 families from damaged bldgs

DAMASCUS, Feb 04: The Syrian authorities will evacuate 4,000 families from damaged buildings in Aleppo city in northern Syria, following the death of 11 civilians when their building collapsed recently, a pro-government newspaper reported on Monday. The authorities will secure alternative housing to the 4,000 families which are living in around 10,000 damaged buildings in Aleppo, said al-Watan newspaper. — Xinhua

Malaysian police detain couple

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 04: A Russian couple accused of violently swinging their four-month-old baby during a street performance to fund their world tour have been detained, Malaysian police said Monday. The buskers, a 28-year-old man and his 27-year-old wife, were picked up after trying to woo spectators in the heart of the capital Kuala Lumpur. — AFP
