Palestinian gov't slams Israeli bill on death penalty

RAMALLAH, Nov 05: The Palestinian Authority (PA) slammed on Monday the Israeli decision to advance a bill that would allow Israeli military courts to punish Palestinian prisoners convicted of killing Israelis by death penalty. Yousef Al-Mahmoud, Palestinian government spokesperson, said in a press statement that the green light given by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to press ahead with this law is "an open call for incitement to kill, execute and to massacre Palestinians." — Xinhua

Malaysian ex-state chief faces graft charges

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 05: The former leader of a resource-rich eastern Malaysian state was charged on Monday with allegedly receiving bribes for the award of timber concessions amid a widening crackdown on abuse by former officials. Musa Aman, who was chief minister of Sabah state on Borneo island since 2003 until the ouster of scandal-tainted Prime Minister Najib Razak's government in May's general election, is the latest high-ranking official to be prosecuted. — AP

N Korean leader meets Cuban president

SEOUL, Nov 05: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with visiting Cuban president in Pyongyang and discussed "crucial issues of common concern" on the current international situation, the North's state media reported on Monday. The visit by Miguel Diaz-Canel comes amid stalled talks between North Korea and the United States and only days after Washington imposed fresh economic restrictions on Cuba. — AFP

China bars scholars from leaving country

BEIJING, Nov 05: A researcher at a prominent Chinese think tank repeatedly targeted by the Communist government said on Monday he and the organisation's director have been barred from leaving the country. Jiang Hao told The Associated Press on that he and director Sheng Hong were due to attend a symposium at Harvard University this month marking the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening policy. — AP

Building collapses in French city

FRANCE, Nov 05: French authorities say a building has collapsed in the southern city of Marseille, but they have no immediate word on any casualties. The regional prefecture tweeted a photo that showed just a pile of rubble and wooden beams. It urged people to avoid the area and make way for the emergency services. — AP

Eating fish reduces symptoms of childhood asthma

SYDNEY, Nov 05: Eating fish such as salmon, trout and sardines can significantly reduce asthma symptoms in children, an international study led by researchers at Australia's La Trobe University showed. Lead researcher Maria Papamichael said the results, released on Monday. — Xinhua
