11 die in Haiti earthquake

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Oct 07: A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck just off the northwest coast of Haiti late Saturday, killing at least 11 people and causing damage to buildings in the Caribbean nation, authorities said. The epicentre of the quake was located about 19 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of the city of Port-de-Paix, the US Geological Survey reported. Government spokesman Eddy Jackson Alexis told that 11 people were so far reported dead, adding that a disaster response task force had been set up. — AFP

Tanushree files case against Patekar for sexual harassment

MUMBAI, Oct 07: Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta has filed a police complaint over her allegation that actor Nana Patekar sexually harassed her on the set of a film in in 2008. Dutta also named choreographer Ganesh Acharya in the complaint. Patekar has denied the allegations and had sent Dutta a legal notice to withdraw the claims and issue an apology. Ganesh Acharya also denied the incident. The 34-year-old Dutta filed the complaint in Mumbai on Saturday. She said that Patekar (67), was inappropriate during a song sequence for the 2008 move 'Horn OK Pleassss'. "Tanushree Dutta has given us a complaint against Nana Patekar. As of now there is not any FIR registered in this case," Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Manoj Kumar Sharma told news agency PTI. — NDTV

700 firefighters in Portugal battle wildfire west of Lisbon

LISBON, Oct 07: Over 700 firefighters are battling a forest fire in Portugal about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Lisbon, the capital. Portugal's civil protection agency said Sunday the fire that started overnight in a national park has forced the evacuation of 47 people and injured eight firefighters and one civilian. Firefighters on the ground are being supported by 225 vehicles and six aerial fire-fighting units. — AP

Israel PM's wife goes on trial in delivery meals case

JERUSALEM, Oct 07: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife Sara Netanyahu goes on trial Sunday for allegedly using state funds to fraudulently pay for hundreds of meals, part of a list of legal troubles facing the family. The start of the trial will be the latest chapter in a saga intensely scrutinised in Israel - but dismissed by the Netanyahus as another "absurd" attempt to discredit them. The veteran premier himself faces possible charges in separate corruption investigations, leading to speculation that he will eventually be forced to step down. — AFP

British editor in Dubai to serve 15 years for killing wife

DUBAI, Oct 07: A British former newspaper editor in Dubai who was convicted of killing his wife with a hammer has had his sentence extended to 15 years. Francis Matthew was found guilty in March of bludgeoning his wife to death at their home and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. — AP

China knife attack claims three lives

BEIJING, Oct 07: Three are dead in China after a man fleeing the scene of a stabbing drove into a crowd and attacked onlookers, police said Sunday. The 42-year-old man surnamed Wang got into a dispute with a companion after an afternoon of drinking and karaoke in the eastern province of Zhejiang. — AFP
