US Secretary Blinken to attend G20 meeting in India

NEW DELHI, Feb 24: US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will travel to New Delhi, India on March 1 to participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting. The meeting will focus on strengthening multilateralism and deepening cooperation on food and energy security, sustainable development, counter-narcotics, global health, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and gender equality and women's empowerment. He will meet with Indian government officials and civil society to reaffirm their strong partnership, according to the US Department of State. India, holding G20 presidency, has invited Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as guest countries to its meetings and summit, according to the Ministry of External Affairs, India. — AP

China coal mine death toll rises to six, 47 missing

BEIJING, Feb 24: China's Inner Mongolia region ordered inspections at all of its open-pit mines on Friday, after at least six people were killed in a landslide at a coal mine, with 47 others still missing. The mine, operated by small local firm Xinjing Coal Mining Co, collapsed in an avalanche of rock on Wednesday, leaving workers buried under a pile of debris.Six people had been pulled out alive by 10:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) on Thursday, state media reported. — Reuters

US billionaire financier Thomas Lee found dead at 78

WASHINGTON, Feb 24: A US billionaire financier who helped pioneer the debt-fuelled corporate acquisition known as a leveraged buyout has been found dead, his family says. In a statement, Thomas H Lee's family said they were "extremely saddened" by the 78-year-old's death. The New York Post reports that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Manhattan office. The NYPD told the BBC an unnamed 78-year-old man had been found dead on Thursday morning at 767 Fifth Avenue. — BBC
