JOYPURHAT, May 18: The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of Joypurhat district is expecting over 50,000 bales of clean jute output this season.

The peasants of the region have brought around 2,400 hectares of land under jute cultivation in the five upazilas in the district during the current season.

Tosha, a developed variety of jute, is growing on 1,300 hectares of land and rest of the land has also come under the production of other varieties.

The farmers can grow some 37 to 38 bales of jute on a hectare of land if favourable weather condition prevails. The low lying land is quite suitable for growing quality jute, DAE official said.

During a recent visit the correspondent found the saplings growing well predicting plenteous production in the district. The farmers of the district are rendering smooth care to make the farming a success.

Amzad Hossain of Puranapul village under Panchbibi upazila said, "I am growing jute on two bighas of land this year." He also said "I expect good production and I am waiting to get cash money selling jute to repay my bank loan."

Some 543 hectares in Pachbibi, 477 in Akkelpur, 500 in Kalai, some 450 in Khetlal upazila and rest of the land in Sadar upazila have been brought under jute cultivation this season.

Arun Kumar Roy of Gudumba village under Akkelpur upazila said, "We are interested in cultivating jute as it gives us cash money during lean period." "Jute sticks are also used for different household purposes", he added.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman said jute cultivation is expanding in the district every year as growers are getting fair price of their produce.

"We provide necessary agri-input among the growers in this connection", he further said.
