About 500,000 Sunamganj inhabitants suffer for delay in road reconstruction

SYLHET, Sept 13: About 500,000 inhabitants of three upazilas in Sunamganj have been suffering much due to delay in the reconstruction of the Sunamganj-Ambari-Katakhali road, which connects a vast area.

Besides, the road has become narrow as the construction materials like sand, stones and iron rods are kept on the roadside places, causing much hassle for the pedestrians and vehicles, locals alleged.

The road used to facilitate reducing journey time for travelling from Sunamganj to Chhatak especially.

Sources informed reconstruction as well as widening works on the said road began in December last year with a targeted expenditure of Tk 425 million.

But since the very start of works things are going on haphazardly and at places the construction waste and materials are kept lying on roadside places for long period of time.

Dismantling of the old road had also been going on haphazardly. The diversion road at bridge sites are also not maintained properly for the vehicles to ply through. Several hundred vehicles of all types ply on the road every day.

The inhabitants of vast area of Sunamganj Sadar, Doarabazar and Chhatak upazilas are the worst sufferers, said a number of locals, adding, reconstruction work on several bridges has started but left incomplete.

On some bridges the work is yet to start and approach roads are yet to be made.

An official said work on three culverts on the said road is complete while work on four others is going on. Work on the project had been delayed or suspended for reasons at places especially for rains recently.

However, he said, "Situation will improve".

The official said they would try completing the wprks by December 2020.
