SYLHET, Nov 19: The authorities could not yet complete the works on a major road development project in Sylhet city's South Surma area.

Locals are suffering since long.

Sources said the project was given time extension twice. Meanwhile, one and a half years have been passed.

The project on the four-lane road from the Keane Bridge to Humayun Rashid Chattar via Kodomtoli Muktijoddha Chattar was started more than one and a half years ago.

Due to delay in works, it was given extension till December this year. But it is still uncertain as the work is on at a snail's pace, alleged a number of locals.

The Tk179 million project to upgrade the old busy road into a four-lane one was taken up as it connects Sylhet railway station and Sylhet Central Bus terminal at Kodomtoli and Nozibunnesa Girls High School years ago under 'Municipal Governance and Services Project'.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith, also the lawmaker from Sylhet Sadar, formally inaugurated the project work in February 2017 with a target to finish by August 2018.

Plying of vehicles of all types is being hampered greatly as heaps of soil is lying here and there while the drain construction on both sides remained incomplete.

Works on the culvert and road construction on different points had also been going at a snail's pace, the locals alleged.

However, the officials of constructing firm claimed 60 per cent works is done and hopefully things would be completed by December.

They said work was hampered during the rainy season.

However, a number of locals including some traders of nearby areas said the sufferings of locals as well of the passengers of bus and trains went to the extreme due to the bad state of the under-construction road.

Besides, it was worst as there had been rains while construction materials are kept haphazardly.

On the other hand due to delay in drain construction the sufferings were serious as the people could not move with transports.
