BOGURA, Dec 01: Flower farmers in the district are expecting to make profit over Tk 100 million ahead of the Victory Day.
Sources said cultivators of varieties of flower had earned over Tk 80 million last season.
Most of the growers are now passing busy days in the gardens as traders from neighbouring districts have started visiting the area to purchase flowers.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said flower cultivation is popular in the district for high market demand. Growers earn good profit also.
Farmers here grow jasmine, rose, tuberose and marigold on vast tracts of land and sell those at high rates, he added.
The official said over 300 male and female workers are engaged with flower cultivation. Hundreds of grassroots growers have become self-reliant by growing varieties of flower.
"I have cultivated flowers on 33 decimals of land spending 0.1 million this season," said Hamudur Rahman of Shajahanpur upazila. "I am expecting to make over Tk 0.3 million profit," he added.
Jamir Uddin of Shibganj upazila said, "Wholesalers gave the farmers advance money for farming flowers to be harvested before December 16."
A good number of peasants said they use both organic and chemical fertilisers in the flower fields for good output.
They said flower plants need special care - like frequent irrigation and weeding ensure good output.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Nikhil Chandra Biswas said, "We provide necessary inputs to the flower growers so that they can get a good yield."
