Growers made a pile of newly harvested bottle gourds at Mohasthan Haat under Shibganj upazila of Bogura district to sell them to the wholesalers — FE Photo BOGURA, Jan 27: The bottle gourd farmers are happy in Bogura district this season getting bumper production and fair price.
Favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agro-inputs boosted high yield this season compared to the last year. The peasants of the had shown the seed of bottle gourd in November and started harvesting the crops since last couple of weeks. They are also selling the crops across the county after meeting local demand.
In a recent visit to Mohasthan haat this correspondent found the farmers taking care of the vegetable from morning to late at night.
The wholesalers are purchasing the vegetable at Tk 1,000 to 1,200 for hundred pieces from the farmers directly. On the other hand, they sell those to Dhaka and Chattogram at Tk 2,000 to 2,200.
"I have cultivated high-breed bottle gourd variety in my 23 decimal of land spending Tk 9,000," said farmer Jalal Hossain under Shibganj upazila. He also said, "I have already sold the crops at Tk 40,000."
The farmers show more interest to grow bottle gourd, said sub-assistance agriculture officer Faridur Rahman. He also said we have provided all sorts of logistic support to the farmers to make the farming grand success.
Farmer Munirul Islam under Adamdighi upazila said he uses both organic and chemical fartiliser simultaneously and gets good yield, he added.
DAE official said bottle gourd farming is bringing solvency among the poor and marginal farmers in the region.
