Chilahati-Holdibari railway track work starts

NILPHAMARI, Sept 22: After long 55 years, construction of Chilahati-Holdibari (India) railway track was inaugurated on Saturday.

Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon inaugurated the works at a function.

On the occasion a meeting was held on the premises of the Chilahati Railway Station.

Presided over by in- charge secretary of the Ministry of Bangladesh Railway Mojibur Rahman, the meeting was attended, among others, by High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Riva Ganguli Das, Asaduzzaman Noor, MP, Aftab Uddin Sarker, MP and Deputy Commissioner, Nilphamari, Hafizur Rahman Chowdhury.

To be implemented at a cost of Tk 82 million, the project would include construction of 8.10 km mail railway track, seven small bridges, signals, telecommunication system, one two-storied rest house, immigration and custom office building.

Sources said the railway route was abandoned during the India-Pakistan war in 1965. Since then it remains suspended.

The rail route between Chilahati and Holdibari (India) comprise a distance of 11.34 km out of which 8.10 km is in Bangladesh portion and 3.24 km is in Indian portion.

Sources said work on the Indian portion has already been completed.

Speaking on the occasion Nurul Islam Sujan said this railway connectivity would go a long way in the trade and investment segment of the region and create connectivity opportunity for the countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) with the Mongla port.
