Chilli cultivation brings smile on faces of marginal growers

SYLHET, Apr 22: Chilli growers of Sylhet division will complete their harvest within a few days.

Sources said cultivation of varieties of chilli was increased during the last Rabi season.

A good number of farmers expanded the farming of the spice due to high profit, said Md Altabur Rahman, additional director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office. Even a vast tract of char area was brought under the farming. Chilli cultivation has brought smile on the faces of numbers of marginal growers. The government provided technical and advisory assistances to the cultivators through departments like BADC and DAE, the official added.

According to the reports from districts, chilli was cultivated on 3332 hectares in the division. It includes 1,315 hectares in Sylhet, 355 hectares in Moulvibazar, 415 hectares in Habiganj and 1247 hectares in Sunamganj, the DAE official further said.

Sources said in some areas, farmers started farming the same item in the just started Kharif-1 season. The season's target is about 470 hectares.
