RAJSHAHI, Sept 22: Farmers of Chapainawabganj district have almost finished the transplantation of saplings of Aman paddy in their fields from the last week of August to the middle of September.

Farmers of the district, however, apprehended the target of production of Aman paddy may not be achieved this year due to a delayed rainfall and an untimely transplantation of the saplings.

Meanwhile, farmers of Chapainwabganj were now busy in the transplantation of Aman saplings in their fields and taking care of the already transplanted ones.

Agriculture Extension Department sources informed, already over 90 per cent of transplantation of paddy saplings have been completed. If the weather remains favourable, there would be satisfactory production of Aman paddy in the district.

According to sources, this year target of transplanting Aman paddy has been fixed at 51,261 hectares of land in the district and already more than 90 per cent of the targetted fields have been covered and rest is expected to be done within next one week.

The upazila-wise break up of target of transplanting Aman is: 8,750 hectares of land in Chapainawabganj Sadar, 22,578 hectares in Nachole upazila, 14,843 hectares in Gomastapur upazila, 4,340 hectares in Bholahat upazila and 750 hectares in Shibganj upazila.

Nazir Hossain, a farmer of Kalupur village under Chapainawabganj sadar upazila informed, despite delayed rainfall, farmers have almost completed cultivation of Aman paddy saplings in their fields. He apprehends, due to a delayed cultivation, the production target of the paddy may not be achieved this year in the district.

Mahbub-e-Khuda, a farmer of Ranihati village under Shibganj upazila said the price of paddy was very low throughout the year whereas the production cost of paddy was comparatively higher. Still, farmers were transplanting paddy because they have no other option. He demanded fixation of a reasonable price of paddy by the government so that farmers are not become losers.

Monjurul Huda, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department of Chapainawabganj informed, despite a delayed rainfall this year, farmers were able to transplant Aman paddy saplings as there was sufficient rainfall in recent weeks.

He further informed, last year there was 250 mm of rainfall during this time but during the same time this year, there is a total of 355 mm of rainfall.

He refuted the farmers' claim of a low production of paddy due to a delayed rainfall and said, despite a delayed rainfall, there might be a satisfactory growth and an abundant paddy production this year because there was excess rainfall this year than that of last year. Farmers also transplanted paddy in the field with a slightly delayed schedule which is not likely to hamper the production.
