JOYPURHAT, Nov 08: Commercial fish cultivation has brought smile on the faces of hundreds of people in the district.

According to the district fisheries office sources, varieties of fish have been cultivated in 20,305 water bodies.

Some 22,509 tonnes of fishes have generally been produced in the district against 20,011 tonnes of local demands.

Besides, the fisheries office has trained up some 1,438 fish farmers this season to make the programme a success.

Sources said everyday a good number big fish traders from the neighbouring districts visit the area to purchase varieties of fishes.

Growers in the district generally cultivate yellow tail catfish, tilapia, koi, shing-magur, sorputi, pabda and some other high-yielding varieties.

Each kg of catfish is selling at Tk 70 to Tk 100, tilapia at Tk 100 to Tk 120, koi Tk 400 to Tk 450, shing at Tk 550 to Tk 600, sorputi at Tk 200 to Tk 250 and pabda at Tk 400 to Tk 450 in the local market.

Some fish traders said they have been suffering for shortage of proper preservation facilities.

They urged the authority concerned to set up more cold storages in the area.

District fisheries officer Md Abdul Jalil Mia said fish farmers are getting fair prices. He urged the farmers to expand the cultivation for more profit.
