Garlic fields affected by disease in Bogura

BOGURA, Mar 04: A good number of garlic farmers in the district are worried as their fields have been affected by root rotting disease massively due to sudden rain.

More than 200 hectares of garlic land have been affected with the disease.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, around 1,000 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of garlic this season.

DAE officials said all sorts of measures have been taken to save the croplands from the disease.

Farmer Muslim Uddin of Dupchanchia upazila said growers are trying their best but were not getting noticeable result yet.

In the situation, some affected farmers of Dupchanchia, Shariakandi, Sonatola, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Shibganj, Dhunot, Shajahanpur and Nandigram upazilas are harvesting immature garlic, said farmer Hafizur Rahman under Shibganj upazila.

Each maund of raw garlic is sold at Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,300 in the retail market.

DAE office sources said affected cultivators have given necessary suggestion in this connection.
