High prices, good yield bring smile on faces of Tangail spinach cultivators

TANGAIL, Dec 03: High prices and good yield have brought smile on the faces of spinach growers in the district this season.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, more than 550 hectares of land have been brought under spinach cultivation this year.

DAE officials said grassroots farmers grow the leafy vegetable every season for easy cultivation procedure, low production cost and high market demand.

Grower Amzad Ali of Nallapara village under Sadar upazila said a good number of peasants in the area are engaged with the production of spinach.

He said farming of the vegetable is profitable as it does not require must fertiliser, irrigation and pesticides.

Moreover, he added, spinach can be grown at homesteads, main land or any empty field. But high sandy land is preferable for the production of the item.

Spinach is short-duration as the growers can harvest it within one and a half months of plantation of the seedlings.

Sources said many growers in the district have changed their financial condition by growing spinach during winter.

Ahmed Ali of char Bohuli village under Sadar upazila said he cultivated spinach on 20 decimals of land this season. He has already earned over Tk 12,000 and is expecting to make more profit till the end of the season.

Another spinach grower Shawkat Hossain of Babupur village said, "Spinach cultivation saves labour cost as my family members take care of the field."

Some traders of Park Moydan Bazar of the district town said there is a high demand for spinach in the local market. "Good price ensure a healthy profit", he added.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Shariful Islam said farmers in the district have been showing their interest in farming spinach and other leafy vegetables due to good profit.

Spinach is selling at Tk 20 to Tk 30 per kg in the retail market and Tk 600 to Tk 800 per maund in the wholesale rate.

DAE official sources said all the 12 upazilas of the district are well-known for growing quality spinach.

Deputy Director of DAE Abdur Razzaque said the district experienced good spinach production this winter. Growers are also happy as they are getting fair prices.
