Hospitals still struggling with dengue patients

Tension rises high in some districts

SYLHET, Aug 20: A total of 18 dengue patients have been admitted to different hospitals in Sylhet divisional city and three others to Sadar hospitals during the last 24 hours till 8:00am on Tuesday.

Of them five were admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital (SOMCH) while the rest 13 were admitted to the private medical colleges and hospitals in the city and the district facilities, informed Director of Health, Sylhet Debapada Roy on Tuesday afternoon.

The number of dengue patients has been on decline in Sylhet and other districts for the last few days, the official said, adding, just days ago the trend was different.

The situation is improving, he said, adding, the separate corner for dengue patients is still functioning at the medical college and hospital.

He said so far as many as 640 were diagnosed as dengue patients in Sylhet division.

Meantime, 585 were released after being cured. There had been no death report in any district of the division, the official added.

However, a physician of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital died of dengue in the capital.

Our Rangpur Corres-pondent adds: The people of Rangpur are still passing days in anxiety, though the number of dengue affected patients is decreasing day by day in the district.

Presently, some 70 dengue affected patients are undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) while some are also undergoing treatment outside RMCH. Many were discharged after treatment, sources also said.

Sources at several hospitals, clinics and dialogistic centres said a good number of panicked people are coming for dengue tests. But the hospital authorities are doing the test only when they find it necessary, sources added.

Tonmoy, a dengue patient who had been undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital said he was affected by the dengue fever after visiting Dhaka. Many other patients said they went to Dhaka before being affected.

However, there was no report of admission of any dengue patient at any upazila level health complex or hospital.

"We have adequate preparation to combat the situation," said acting director of RMCH Dr. Sultan Ahmed. They also have enough dengue detection kits, he added.

Our Correspondent from Gopalganj says: A total of 240 dengue patients have been identified in Gopalganj Sadar, Tungipara and Muksudpur hospitals in the district till Tuesday, according to hospital sources.

Of them, 180 patients are admitted to Gopalganj Sadar Modernised Hospital, 33 at Tungipara Hospital and 27 at Muksdupur Hospital.

There is no death report in the district. Some 210 returned home after receiving treatment, hospital sources said.

On the other hand, district administration, Gopalganj municipality and union councils have taken various steps to check breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.

The district administration also conducts mobile court drives for cleaning areas of the city.

Dr Tarun Mondal, Civil Surgeon, Gopalganj, said, "We are trying our best to ensure proper treatment to the dengue-affected patients."

Gopalganj municipal Mayor Kazi Liyakat Ali Leku said cleanliness drive is going on in the city. People should be careful of the situation, he added.

Our Bogura Correspondent writes: Tension rose high as the number of dengue patients is increasing in the district as some 22 more dengue patients have been identified here in the last 24 hours.

A total of 97 patients are taking treatment across the district. From July 25 to August 25, 722 people were hospitalized with dengue and 625 of them returned home after treatment.
