RAJSHAHI, July 20: Farmers of Rajshahi heaved a sigh of relief as the incessant rainfall during the last one week has become a boon for them. Earlier, they were worried about transplantation of Aman seedlings to the main land due to absence of rain during the rainy month Ashar.

But they are now spending busy time transplanting seedlings of Aman paddy on their field. Even, getting wet and drenched in rain, day labourers are working in the field.

A good number of farmers said Bangla months Ashar and Sraban are suitable time for preparing field, sowing seeds and transplanting seedlings of Aman paddy in the field.

But in absence of rain during the entire Ashar month, farmers were worried and left the land fallow because cultivation of Aman by irrigating the fields through deep and shallow tubewells is costly and requires extra labour.

Farmers expressed their hope that Aman paddy transplantation will be completed within the next 10 to 15 days.

Tariqul Islam, a farmer of Gollapara village under Tanore upazila, said Aman growers depend on rain to save the irrigation cost.

But, over the last couples of years, the climate pattern has changed. "We do not even get sufficient rain during the rainy season". The grower said, adding, "last year, there was an early rain and the fields dried up during the time of preparing lands for paddy cultivation."

Shariqul Islam, Tanore upazila agriculture officer, said during the current season a target of transplanting Aman saplings on 23,580 hectares of land has been fixed.
