SYLHET, Mar 25: Locals have alleged large scale irregularities in the protective work on the Surma riverbank under Doarabazar upazila of Sunamganj district.

The contracting firm, they said, was not able to finish the work even after extension of time.

They also raised question about the quality of work already done. "What will we do if we face massive erosion in the upcoming monsoon?"

The Water Development Board (WDB), through bidding, awarded the job to a firm in two packages.

One is of Tk 14.7 million for 230 metre and the other worth Tk 15.7 million for 250 metre protective works.

The firm was supposed to complete the work by January 31, but failed even to do a major part of the work till date.

"We do not know whether the work will be completed before monsoon", they further said.

An official admitted that they have got complaints from locals. However the work was affected for labour shortage and other reasons, he said, adding, "We have already asked the contractor for completing the job on san urgent basis."

Executive Engineer of WDB, Sunamganj-II, Khushimohan Sarker said if the contractor fails to complete the work on time the firm would face punishment.
