Joypurhat spinach farmers eying Tk 15m profit in upcoming winter

JOYPURHAT, Sept 22: Spinach farmers in the district are expecting to make a profit over Tk 15 million during the upcoming winter season.

More than 20,000 growers of Akkelpur, Kalai, Khetlal, Panchbibi and Sadar upazilas will grow the popular leafy vegetable, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Azizur Rahman.

If the weather remains favourable till December, it is possible to produce 75,000 tonnes of spinach, the official added.

In this connection over 13,000 hectares of land have already been brought under the farming of the item, he further said.

In a visit recent to different areas of the district this correspondent found a good number of peasants show their interest in cultivation of spinach.

They said the venture is profitable as it is popular in the market.

Deputy director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said a vast tract of land come under spinach farming in the district every winter.

The department provides all sorts of support to the farmers in this regard, he added.
