Jute farming going on in full swing in Sylhet div

SYLHET, Apr 21: Jute cultivation is going on in full swing in Sylhet division. Against the target of 1,685 hectares of land, 1,438 hectares of land have already been brought under the farming of the golden fibre, an official of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, informed on Friday.

The area includes hectares in 170 Sylhet which had a target of 185 hectares, 16 hectares in Moulvibazar, having a target of 30 hectares and 480 hectares in Habiganj which had a target of 404 hectares. In Sunamganj district, the cultivated area is 772 hectares against a target of 1,066 hectares, the official added.

Sources said farming of Kenaf, Mesta, Tosha and other local jute varieties is on the rise in the region.

The farming area would be increased further, said additional director of the department Md Altabur Rahman. Some selected poor farmers were given some assistance this year, the official said, adding, better price of the crops had prompted the common farmers to cultivating Jute. Besides, some farmers cultivate it for family consumption as vegetable.

Sikandar Ali, a farmer of Kandigaon village under Golapganj upazila, said jute leaf as vegetable is popular across the country. High price of jute leaf also encourages the growers in farming the cash crop.
