MAGURA, Sept 14: The construction of the 250-bed Magura Sadar Hospital building has been completed. But the hospital authority is still continuing their activities in the old building.

The construction of Tk 250 million 250-bed building was inaugurated on March 21, 2017.

It may be mentioned that the 100-bed Magura Sadar Hospital was upgraded to 250-bed one in 2017.

Sources said, only the ground floor of the new building is being used as the Emergency Ward and Pathology Department and the third floor for the Magura Medical College office.

On an average 250 to 300 patients get admitted at the hospital every day.

But the old building is unable to accommodate the huge number of patients.

So patients are often found lying on the floor of the hospital wards. Even they are occupying veranda of the hospital due to crisis of hospital beds.

The hospital has three ambulances but two of them are out of order. The authority did not take any steps to repair the ambulances.

Among 28 posts of doctor, five posts are lying vacant.

Three others are not available in the hospital for being on deputation and participation in training courses.

Patients and attendants are also suffering due to poor condition of toilets.

They cannot use those for shortage of water and absence of lighting.

Sources said brokers exploit the patients at the hospital. They allegedly force the patients to go to private diagnostic centres and clinics for required tests and surgeries.

Long queue of patients in front of doctors' chambers is a common scenario at the hospital as the medical representatives meet the doctors frequently, the sources added.

The hospital superintendent Shapan Kuamr Kundu said, "We cannot shift to the new building due to lack of power connection.

"We have sent a letter to authority concerned informing the present situation. We also run mobile courts to check the entry of brokers and medical representatives", he added.
