Market prices delight Bogura maize farmers

BOGURA, June 23: Farmers of the district has started harvesting maize.

Sources said the harvest will continue until the last week of July.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extinction (DAE), peasants of Shibganj, Sherpur, Dhunot, Gabtoly, Shajanpur and Nandigram have cultivated the crop on 7,876 hectares of land this season.

Production of 7,000 hectares of land has already been harvested, DAE officials added.

Growers have achieved a satisfactory yield this season, said sub-assistance agri-official Faridur Rahman.

"I have cultivated maize on 30 decimals of land spending Tk 5,000," said Firoz Hossain of Sherpur upazila.

The grower said he completed the harvest and sold the produce at Tk 12,800 in the retail market.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE (Marketing) GM Masud said maize is selling at Tk 16.30 to Tk 16.50 per kg across the district.

It was Tk 14 to Tk 15 last year, the official added.
