SYLHET, Aug 17: The Moulvibazar-Shamshernagar-Chatlapore road has become almost unusable due to innumerable potholes and ditches developed on the important road that connects the Chatlapore frontier and LC station, through which border trade is on.

The locals also suffer much due to the dilapidated condition of the road for long. The matter was brought to the notice of authorities concerned time and again but nothing has yet been done.

However, an official said a project has been in the process of approval for the improvement of the road. If approved, works on the Tk 430 million project may start this year.

The 33.5 km road from Moulvibazar district town to Chatlapore border is used by a good number of inhabitants of Moulvibzar, Komolganj and Kulaura upazilas on a regular basis. With the plying of a good number of vehicles of all modes through the road, it plays an important role while there are a number of tea gardens in the area.

But, it has been in a pitiable state for last three years due to absence of required maintenance and repair.

Locals alleged often some ditches are covered temporarily. After even a moderate rainfall the road becomes unusable often. Even small and large ditches had developed on the Moulvibazar town areas like at Maijpara, Eye hospital, Shimultola, Langurpur, Kacharibazar, Chaitraghat and Baburbazar road etc. Although some broken bricks were used to fill the ditches, things go as usual after rains, locals added.

On the other hand, many people have started using the road from Baburbazar to Deorachhara tea garden and Kalenga to reaching the district town making the situation more deplorable.

A number of drivers of commercial vehicles, who use the road regularly said it had become almost impossible to ply through this road as there are innumerable ditches at places. Besides, the vehicles like autorickshaws often go inoperative on midway, they claimed. We have to do repair works on the 3-wheelers almost every week, said a driver.

An official at the Roads and Highways Department said a project for repair on the Moulvibazar-Shamshernagar-Chatlapore road has been prepared for improving 20 km on it initially. The rest parts would be done later, he added. The flood-hit parts would also be improved later, the official said.
