Off-season mango in Natore market

NATORE, Sept 22: Off-season mango cultivation applying bagging method has brought smile on the faces of many growers in Bagatipara uapzila of the district.

Adhering to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) instructions, the farmers of the district are getting bumper production. The farmers are applying bagging method to get toxic-free fruits.

The lean seasonal mango variety is being sold at Tk 500 to Tk 520 per kilogram in the retail market and Tk 450 to Tk 480 per kilogram in the wholesale markets.

The farming is consider as boon for good number of marginal farmers in the upazila as they are making Tk 400 to Tk 450 producing a kg of fresh fruit this season, said upazila agriculture officer Mosraje Hossain.

The fruits are being sold at different adjacent district including Dhaka meeting local demand, said wholesaler Abu Nasor Md Jamil Hossain of Muladul area.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources the peasants have taken around 30 hectares of land on Gourimati mango farming this season imparted necessary training in a systematic way.

Gourimoti, short duration off-seasonal mango variety, cultivation is gaining momentum across the region due to its lucrative price and cheap production cost.

The mango variety evolved in 2012 by Natore horticulture centre, said deputy director of DAE Subrato Kumar Sarker.

The off-seasonal mango farming has started to bring solvency among many farmers in the region, said farmer Jahir Uddin under the upazila.

He further said it is high time to plant Gourimati mango farming if anyone wants to grow it on commercial basis.

The farmers show more interest to grow the mango verity as they are getting five times more profit.

Getting repeated bumper production and fair market price previous year, good numbers of farmers are now engaged in the mango cultivation commercially across the area this season.

During a recent visit at the mango garden the correspondent found farmers are working in their mango orchard as its cultivation bring happiness. The mango started appearing in the local markets in a small scale.

Farmer Golam Maula said he planted 2,000 Gourimoti mango saplings three years ago on 24 bighas of land spending Tk 0.2 million.

He harvested mango from 100 trees this season.
