SYLHET, July 01: Over a hundred kilometre road in Sylhet district is badly damaged by the recent floods.

It causes much for the pedestrians and vehicular movement.

The badly-affected roads include the Sylhet-Zakiganj regional highway, Charkhai-Beanibazar, Darbast-Kanaighat-Shahbag and Sari-Gowainghat roads.

Among these, the condition of Sylhet-Zakiganj highway is stated to be the worst as a good number of ditches had been developed on places on about 5.0 km.

It may be stated that the 90-km road connects at least six upazilas.

Besides, many more of the upazila connecting roads under the LGED were affected by the floods, sources said.

It may be about 120 kilometres, an official said, adding, a detailed survey is not prepared yet.

A programme would be taken for repairing those rural roads, the official further said.

Some urgent steps to keep the roads usable had been done, said Executive Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department, Sylhet, Ranjan Samanta said.

However some major schemes to repair the road would be done soon, he added.

The recent floods, caused by the excess rains coupled with rolling of water from hilly areas had hit the region days ago.

Vast tracts of crop land in Zakiganj, Kanaighat, Gowainghat, Beanibazar, Golapganj, Balaganj, Osmaninagar and Companiganj upazilas went inundated.

Some flood control embankments were badly damaged and about 300,000 people became marooned for days.

A report of the district administration also mentioned Zakiganj upazila as the worst affected one.
