Prices of essentials go up in Cox's Bazar

COX'S BAZAR, May 21: The prices of essentials including vegetables increased in the kitchen markets of the district and its adjoining areas with the advent of Ramadan, the fasting month of the Muslims.

During visit to the some kitchen markets of the town this correspondent seen on Sunday that almost all the vegetables were being retailed between Tk 70 and Tk 90 per kg in the markets.

Per piece banana was selling at Tk 13 to Tk 16 in all the markets of the town. Ahead of the month of Ramadan per piece banana was selling at Tk 6.0 to Tk 9.0. People of low income group facing acute hardship to buy banana as Iftar item. Brinjal was selling at Tk 70 to Tk 90 per kg, tomato at Tk 65-80 per kg, papaya at Tk 60 to Tk 65 per kg, bitter gourds at Tk 70 to Tk 80 per kg and cucumber at Tk 65 to Tk 75 per kg. Bottle gourd was being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 70 per piece on Sunday.

Green chilli was selling at Tk 60 to Tk 80 in these markets. Buyers said that prices of most of the vegetables almost doubled in the town markets in last three days.

Beef was being sold at Tk 500 to Tk 550 per kg while mutton Tk 700 to Tk 800 per kg. Broiler chicken was selling at Tk 170 to Tk 200 per kg and locally bred hens at Tk 450 to Tk 500 per kg.

The prices of onion and garlic remained unchanged in the local markets over the week. Local variety of onions was selling at Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kg while the imported variety of onion was retailing at Tk 35 to Tk 40.

Imported garlic was selling at Tk 110 to Tk 120 per kg while the local variety at Tk 80 to Tk 90 per kg.

Traders said the retail prices of vegetables increased as the wholesale price went up due to excessive demand for the items in the town and its adjoining areas.
