Pumpkin cultivation expanding in Tangail

TANGAIL, May 07: Commercial cultivation of pumpkin is increasing in the district.

Sources said both high and sandy char areas are suitable for the vegetable.

Some 1,000 to 1,500 pumpkins can be produced on a bigha of land. Madhupur upazila of the district is well-known in growing quality pumpkin, sources added.

A big pumpkin is being sold at Tk 50 to Tk 75 in the local market.

DAE sources said a total of 350 hectares of land were brought under the farming of pumpkin this season, whereas at was 300 hectares last year.

Farmer Akbar Hossain of Jugni village under Sadar upazila said he cultivated pumpkin on two bighas of land and got a good production. Another grower Abdul Ahad of Gabshara union under Bhuapur upazila said he has recently harvested 300 pumpkins from his land.

Nargis Akhter, sub-assistant agri-official of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, said low production cost, easy procedure and good return are the main reasons for the expansion of farming of the item.
