GAIBANDHA, Feb 25: Re-excavation work of 03-km long Mora Karotoa river at Gumaniganj union under Gobindaganj upazila has been progressing fast since January this year.

The Department of Fisheries has been implementing the work under the project of Fisheries Production Enhancement through re-excavating the water bodies at the cost of Tk 10.9 million. The government is providing the fund, office sources said.

The objectives of the river re-excavation are to increase the production of indigenous fish species, meet the demand of protein, help change the livelihood of the local fishermen, conduct irrigation activities to produce Boro paddy using the surface water of the river and protect the bio-diversity of the area, said an official.

Recovering grabbed land from the local influential people and plant various trees on the river banks are the other objectives of the re-excavation work of the river that lost navigability, the official added.

District fisheries officer Abdud Dayan Dulu said over 30 per cent work had already been completed and the rest of the work would be finished by March 31, 2019.

He sought whole hearted cooperation of all to make the re-excavation work of the river a success.
