BOGURA, June 09: A good number of grassroots people in the district have improved their livelihood by rearing sheep on commercial basis.

Sources said sheep farming is gaining momentum across the district including the vast char area as it is proved profitable to the farmers.

A matured sheep gives birth to four to five calves in a year.

Farmers generally use Napier and Gumbo grasses as fodder.

The district Youth Department provides short-term training on rearing sheep.

Besides, the department provides easy loan facility among the rearers.

"A farmer can rear around 20 sheep at a farm on two decimals of land. It may cost around Tk 0.1 million but over Tk 0.2 million return is possible within six months," said upazila livestock officer Abdul Jalil.

"I have ten sheep at my small farm. My investment was Tk 56,000 and I am expecting to make a profit of Tk 0.1 million during the upcoming Eid-ul- Azha market", said Tofazzal Hossain of Sherpur upazila.

A 22 kg to 25 kg sheep is sold at Tk 12,000 to Tk 15000, a middle one weighing around 15 kg to 16 kg at Tk 8,000 to Tk 9,000 and around 8.0 kg to 10 kg one at Tk 4,000 to Tk 5,000 in the local market.
