SYLHET, May 21: Summer vegetables cultivation is going on in full swing in Sylhet division this season. Against the target of 17,333 hectares of land, already 17,114 hectares have been brought under the farming, an official of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, informed on Monday.
The area includes 5,750 hectares in Sylhet which has a target of 5,725 hectares, 3875 hectares in Moulvibazar, having a target of 3,848 hectares and 5,000 hectares in Habiganj which had the target of 5,200 hectares. In Sunamganj district the achieved area is 2,489 against a target of 2,560 hectares, the official added.
Sources said cultivation of all types of vegetable is on the rise in the region due to favourable weather condition.
The farming area would be increased, said Additional Director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, Md Altabur Rahman.
Some selected poor farmers were earlier given some seed and other assistance this year, he said, adding, better price of the crops had prompted the common farmers to some uncommon crops even. Besides, the special programme for bringing arable lands under farming in the Sylhet division also played an important role in this connection.
A farmer from Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet Abdul Bari said the better price of vegetables after the repeated floods last season inspired many cultivators. Some non-traditional vegetable varieties also became popular due to the better returns. Vegetable prices generally go up this time as the supply cannot meet the demand. Some additional villagers also join farming of different vegetable for meeting their own demand.
Many farmers had also joined using organic fertilisers for a better and quality yield, he said, the DAE through some special project provided some assistance for setting vermicompost units through some leading farmers at villages with a target to disseminating popularising it among the common farmers.
