T-Aman cultivation exceeds target in Gaibandha

Sylhet growers eye 973,793 tonnes of output

GAIBANDHA, Sept 12 (BSS): The high-yielding T-Aman paddy cultivation target has exceeded in all seven upazilas of the district this season as farmers are expecting its bumper production.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials here said today the target for bringing a total of 1, 17,549 hectares of land under T-Aman cultivation had been set during the current session with fixing the production target of 3,14,712 tonnes of rice.

But the farming target has exceeded bringing more 6581 hectares of land under T-Aman cultivation by now thanks to favorable climate condition, they said.

DAE officials said some 19180 hectares of land were cultivated in Sadar upazila, 15,230 in Sadullapur upazila, 13,570 in Palashbari upazila, 30,350 in Gobindaganj upazila, 27450 in Sundarganj upazila, 14,150 in Saghata upazila and 4200 in Fulchhari upazila.

The transplanted seedlings of Aman paddy have already grown well and the paddy fields turned into greenish look.

The growers are so much busy with nurturing the paddy field alongside the hopes of getting its desired production this season.

Making the cultivation programme a grand success, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation distributed high quality Aman seed to the farmers at a fair price through its sale centers and approved dealers, the officials added.

Besides, different state run commercial banks including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) are disbursing agri loans on easy terms to the poor and marginal farmers to help them cultivate the T-Aman paddy, said M Sarwar Hossain, zonal manager of RAKUB here.

In addition, DAE has been imparting training to the farmers for adopting modern technologies for paddy cultivation, crop management and preservation of quality seed, said Showkat Osman, district training officer of DAE.

To ensure the production target of T-Aman paddy in the district this year, BMDA has also kept its 505 electricity run deep tube wells fully ready to irrigate the Aman paddy field, if necessary, said executive engineer M. Azazul Islam.

Talking to the news agency, deputy director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin said necessary measures had also been taken for availability of fertilizers, insecticides and other agriculture inputs at the grass roots level of the district during the current season.

Our s correspondent adds: Farmers in Sylhet division are passing busy time in T-Aman cultivation.

About 97 per cent of the target has already been achieved, official sources informed recently.

An official at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), divisional office, said seedbed on 23,850 hectares of land were prepared against the target of 20,421 hectares of land.

According to a report by the DAE, so far 130,035 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of T-Aman in Sylhet district, 97,593 hectares in Moulvibazar, 76,000 hectares in Habiganj and 71,660 hectares in Sunamganj.

However, the total cultivated area includes 313,752 hectares of high yielding varieties and 58,536 hectares of local varieties.

The division's target of rice production is set at 973,793 tonnes.

Some 372,288 hectares of land have already been brought under the farming, said additional director of DAE Md Altabur Rahman.

During the last year's T- Aman season, farming of the crop was also a good one amid a good weather.
