T Aman farming begins in Sylhet to produce over 9,73,700m tonnes

SYLHET, July 16: Farmers in Sylhet division have been engaged in the cultivation of Transplanted Aman paddy in a bid to yield highest, officials and a number of farmers said.

Already seedbed had been prepared on a total of 14,538 hectares of land against a target of 20,421 hectares in the region, an official at the divisional office of DAE's divisional office informed this afternoon.

The division's target of production had been set at 973,793 tonnes of rice from the targeted area of 384,005 hectares.

Of the total target area, 138,335 hectares would be in Sylhet to produce 3197832 tonnes of rice, 96246 hectares in Moulvibazar for producing 265434 tonnes of rice, 75,210 hectares in Habiganj for targeted yield of 205060 tonnes of rice and 74,214 hectares of Sunamganj district for producing 183,517 tonnes of rice.

In many areas farmers have already cultivated about 15,000 hectares of land as yet, informed the Additional Director of the DAE's division level office Md. Altabur Rahman this afternoon. The farming is well as yet with a good weather with required rains, he added.

During the last year's Tranplanted Aman season farming of the crop was a good one with favourable weather behaviour.

Although the target was a bigger one the crop was cultivated on 375,800 hectares in 4 districts of the division, the official said, per hectare yield stood at about 2.8 tonnes from high yielding varieties and 1.6 tonnes from local varieties.

However a total of 387,150 hecatres were cultivated last year. It includes 140,245 hectares in Sylhet, 96,435 hectares in Moulvibazar, 75,500 hectares in Habiganj and 74,970 hectares in the district of Sunamganj.

However, farmers in different areas couldn't recover the flood damages while many farmers failed to replant their lands due to the longer duration of floods. Severe and prolonged floods that season had damaged Transplanted Aman crops on 5650 hectares, affecting a total of 43,782 farmers in the division.
