Tangail growers achieve solvency by cultivating banana

TANGAIL, Jan 15: Growers of different areas of the district are attaining solvency by cultivating banana during the last few years.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Tangail sources, banana was gradually gaining popularity in the area due to less investment and more profit.

Sub-Assistant of DAE Tangail Shariful Islam said, the office is trying to help by providing necessary advice on banana cultivation, training and other related agri- inputs to increase the production.

Local market sources said trading of large quantity of bananas takes place at Park Moydan Bazaar wholesale market every day. The quantity of different types of banana is increasing in the local markets, sources added.

Banana grower Hasan Ali, son of Naiem Ali of Modhupur upazila of the district told The Financial Express, "I cultivated banana on my 45 decimal of land this season instead of paddy as the paddy price disheartened me last season".

He said, "I earned Tk 40,000 as net profit by growing the fruit, where I could earn only Tk 12,000 to Tk 15,000 profit from the same land," he added.

Witnessing his success many of his neighbours and different villages of the area have shown keen interest to cultivate banana on their homesteads and crop lands. Many of them have been financially benefited by cultivating different type of banana such as, Shabri, Madni, Champa and Shagor etc he said.

Among the twelve upazilas of the district Modhu, Ghatail, Shakhipur upazila and Mirzapur upazila of the district are producing major quantity of banana, Ruhul Amin, sub-assistant (hoity-culture) DAE, Tangail said.

A retail banana trader of Park Moydan Bazaar said, one hali (four pieces) of shabri is being sold at the local market at Tk 15 to Tk 25 as per quality, one hali shagor being sold at Tk 10 to Tk 20 and one hali of champa being sold at Tk 10 to Tk 15.

Abdur Razzaque Deputy Director of DAE Tangail informed, the weather and soil of the district are suitable for growing banana, beside huge demand and good market price, less cultivation cost are encouraging the local growers to cultivate it more.
