BOGURA, Mar 21: Use of perching method in the crop fields is gaining popularity among the farmers in the district.

Many growers told this correspondent that they are applying the method in Boro paddy land and getting positive results.

"It reduces our production cost as it is an environment-friendly way to check harmful pests," they added.

Under the method, farmers erect bamboo poles or tree branches on crop fields so that pest-eating birds can sit there easily.

Birds like owl, sparrow, magpie and martin sit on the branches and eat pests, said farmer Abdul Awal of Gunaher village under Kahaloo upazila.

"I use perching method in my Boro paddy field according to the suggestion of sub-assistant agriculture officers of DAE," said farmer Bikash Chandra under Shibganj upazila.

He said, "I am getting good result since I set 100 branches on my five bighas of crop land."

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said they encourage growers to use the method in their crop fields. It reduces costs.
