Circulation of counterfeit currency ahead of Eid

August 15, 2018 00:00:00

Every year, before any major religious festival, counterfeit currency starts to enter the market. This is especially true during Eid-ul Azha and the puja festivals when people from all walks of life go to the market to buy sacrificial animals, clothing or other items. This is the time when it is easy to slide in a few fake notes among change that the buyers are supposed to get. The hustle and bustle in the kitchen markets, cattle market, train and bus stations make it difficult to inspect each and every note. As such, most counterfeit gangs pick these times.

The Bangladesh Bank has already sent letters to all commercial banks asking them to be more alert and prevent fake note circulation. Big and small traders are now keeping fake currency detector machine.

But it is quite difficult for common people to detect fake currency. To be on the safe side, some people can use mobile banking or credit or debit cards.

Hopefully the law enforcing agencies will take proper and effective measures to ensure that such rackets cannot ruin the festive mood of people.
