Damaged currency notes

January 10, 2019 00:00:00

Damaged and worn-out currency notes are increasingly becoming a nuisance. It is not at all uncommon for people to find a few such notes in the bundles of Tk 100 and Tk 500 after withdrawing money from the bank.

Most bank accountholders and representatives of accountholders are unaware that it is best not to leave the cash counter without checking all the notes in the bundle. If there are damaged notes, these can be produced to the teller right away to be replaced by fresh notes.

Most people do not know that if they leave the bank premises and return with the torn or unusable notes later, the teller would instead say that there is no proof that these notes were among the ones in the bundle provided earlier.

I have faced this problem as it is not always possible to check all the notes in bundles due to limited time at hand. I have often been faced with the question: If the banks are not going to accept torn and worn-out notes from clients, then why do they hang notices saying, "Torn and worn out notes exchanged here"?

I hope the central bank will look into the matter.
