I have recently read 'The Inferno' by Dan Brown. The plot of the thriller novel sheds light on the burgeoning world population and its disastrous consequences on the human race. It was an interesting read and there is a lot of food for thought. Global human population growth amounts to around 83 million annually or 1.10 per cent every year. Because of this growth, pollution is increasing leading to serious environmental problems.
Increasing population has been a problem for our country for decades. Compared to the resources, the population has been very high causing poverty, illiteracy and other social ills. Our government is tackling these issues and gradually leading the economy to sustainable growth. However, we can only imagine how developed the country would have been by now if our population was not this large. I hope that the policymakers will keep this issue in mind. The civil society should also do its part by creating awareness among the general population.
