Muhith and the budget

June 20, 2018 00:00:00

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith should be felicitated for the national budgets he has placed in parliament so far. The minister, with his government machinery, mobilises a massive sum of money as budget outlay and, on the other hand, takes measures to spend the same within the next one year. On placing of the budget, there is a list of projects in the pipeline. Even the implementation is rigorously monitored.

I would like to take the liberty to congratulate the government officers for doing their job properly. In fact, we are now reaping the benefits of our investment in education and social sectors, which has led to better quality of life.

We have to appreciate the minister for his attention to every segment of society and different interest groups. He has been a believer in consultation. And, he remains a polymath. His expectation of discourse on the budget is genuine.

Among other things, the finance minister had to reflect in his budget proposals on issues pertaining to large project loans, nuclear energy and Rohingya issue.

I would like to offer profound respect for the wisdom, determination and competence the finance minister and his very learned and powerful team have shown to us. The recent discourse by the Planning Minister, Information Minister and Agriculture Minister also adequately demonstrates their depth in the understanding of budget, it's imperatives and challenges.

Finally, the finance minister dedicated his recent book, titled "Economy of Bangladesh", to the "toiling peasants, factory labourers, and construction and transport workers, providers of various services and household workers of Bangladesh". Now one cannot put him or his government at fault for not being concerned about the poor.

We should felicitate him and not criticise him. As conscious citizens and economic actors, we have to maintain the resolve and respond to the opportunities.
