Plan for electric trains

July 20, 2019 00:00:00

On July 17, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the government is planning to introduce electric and high-speed trains in the country so as to make the railway services better and faster.

The UNB quoted her as saying, "We've a plan to generate more electricity as we're now producing 22,000 MW...we'll be able to introduce electric trains in near future...we'll set up rail lines for remote areas as well to introduce speedy trains for easier communications".

This is indeed a great idea. Train fares are cheap when compared with fares of other transports. Also, as the trains have their own tracks, there is usually no fear of traffic congestion leading to delays, as is the case with long-distance buses and trucks. So passengers along with cargoes can be easily transported with the help of high-speed electric trains.

The PM made these remarks while inaugurating 'Benapole Express' that will run between capital Dhaka and Benapole of Jashore, and the extension service of Dhaka-Rajshahi non-stop intercity 'Bonolata Express' train to Chapainawabganj.

The inauguration of the new train service and the extension of another will also help most people who hail from these parts. Reportedly, the Benapole Express will reduce the existing travel time by one hour and 15 minutes. This will allow the Bangladesh Railway to earn Tk 340 million annually.

In fact, if train coverage is extended across the country, a lot of traffic congestion on the highways will be greatly reduced. The Bangladesh Railway (BR) should ensure that the train schedule is strictly followed. Additionally, the service quality of the trains should be improved.

I hope that the BR and related ministries will consider these steps.
