Remembering Bangabandhu: The architect of a nation

August 16, 2018 00:00:00

The nation observed the National Mourning Day with due reverence and solemnity Wednesday, marking the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family. It will forever be regarded as a black day in the history of Bangladesh.

Bangabandhu was assassinated along with most of his family members on August 15, 1975 by some army personnel. The murder had plunged the whole nation into sheer uncertainty and years of political turmoil.

Fortunately, Bangabandhu's two daughters -Sheikh Hasina, now the prime minister, and Sheikh Rehana- survived the killing spree as they were on a visit to West Germany at that time.

Bangabandhu had dreamt of a just and democratic society in Bangladesh. But at the moment, one may say that Bangladesh is very divided as a nation, which is against the vision of the father of the nation. The people of Bangladesh need to get united to fulfil his dreams.

The August 15 happenings still make the nation weep even after 43 long years. Such tragic incident should never take place in any part of the world.
