Unplanned tree plantation harms in the long run

August 16, 2018 00:00:00

Monsoon is the most suitable time for tree plantation. It is favourable not only for the environment, but also for all living beings including the human.

Also, adult trees can help in many different ways. The wood can be used for furniture and have many other uses. Some trees provide us with delicious fruits.

As Bangladesh is a densely populated country, its arable lands are rapidly depleting. Recently I have had the pleasure to visit different districts in remote areas, including my native village. I observed that many people in the villages plant trees without any plan. They argue that tree plantation is now more about moneymaking than cropping.

I support using all infertile lands for planting trees. But if it is an arable land, it is a matter of concern. Because if an arable land is used for tree plantation even once, then there is a chance for it to become infertile. Hence, the increasing population may continue to absorb arable lands for their shelter and even the number of arable lands may be on the decline after tree plantation. And it will cause depletion to the number of fertile lands at a faster rate.

Planned agro-forestry should be encouraged by the government for the public instead of unplanned tree plantation.
