Ways to reshape the banking sector

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) held a dialogue recently where it was revealed that over the last 10 years, the banking sector has experienced misappropriation of BDT 220 billion due to various scams. This includes both government and private banks.

Experts from the banking sector, economists and former officials of Bangladesh Bank were present at the dialogue. They spoke at the event and proposed various remedies for the ailing banking sector. They urged that the banking industry should be indemnified from political interferences.

Banking sector is like the heart of the economy. To save the banking industry from ruination, concerted efforts from the government, Bangladesh Bank and other stakeholders are a must. Political commitment and non-interference from the government in the banking industry are ways to reshape it. It should be ensured that the scammers get exemplary punishment for their wrongdoings and do not receive any tacit support through political or government connections.

Good governance needs to be ensured in the banking industry.
