Bangladesh will seek extended support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), as its President Takehiko Nakao is coming to Dhaka on February 27 for a two-day visit, officials said on Friday.

The Economic Relations Division (ERD) officials said the government high-ups will seek higher support for Bangladesh during the meeting with the ADB president, as the country needs huge investment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mr Nakao, who is coming to Bangladesh for the second time, will mainly assess progress of the ADB-supported development programmes in the country, a senior ERD official said.

During his first visit to Bangladesh in June 2014, the ADB president met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, cabinet ministers and high officials.

Currently, the Manila-based lender has notable investments in Bangladesh's railway, power and transport sectors.

ADB Dhaka office in a statement on Friday said their chief will visit some selected ADB-assisted projects in power, education, urban infrastructure, and rail transport sectors in Bangladesh.

It said he will also meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Finance Minister A M A Muhith and other senior officials in Dhaka. The ADB president will leave Dhaka on February 28.

ADB is the second largest development partner of Bangladesh, as it has been providing financial support amounting to US$800 million- $1.0 billion annually over the last few years.

Bangladesh joined ADB in 1973, and in 1982 became the first member to host a field office of the bank.

According to ADB, it has confirmed more than $20 billion in loans, grants and technical assistance for Bangladesh.
