Convince Myanmar to take back Rohingya, PM tells China

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged on Tuesday China to persuade Myanmar so that they take back their over one million Rohingya nationals from Bangladesh, reports UNB.

The Prime Minister made the plea when Chinese Ambassador in Bangladesh Zhang Zuo met her at her Sangsad Bhaban office.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said the Prime Minister expressed again her firm stance over the Rohingya issue saying that the displaced people have to go back to their homeland.

The Chinese ambassador said China will play a constructive role in resolving the Rohingya issue.

Meanwhile, Beijing has invited Prime Minister Hasina to pay an official visit to China from July 01-05.

The Chinese government also invited the Prime Minister to attend the annual meeting of the "New Champions" which is known as "Summer Davos" to be held in Dalian on July 01-03.

It will be Sheikh Hasina's first bilateral visit to Beijing following her party's overwhelming victory in the last parliamentary elections.

She will have meetings with President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang during the crucial visit.

The Press Secretary said the Prime Minister and the Ambassador also discussed the Prime Minister's China visit.

Hasina said four instruments on bolstering bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and China will be signed during her visit to China.

Both the Prime Minister and the envoy expressed satisfaction over the existing bilateral relations between the two nations and hoped that the ties will be further strengthened in the days to come.

The Chinese envoy said the Dhaka-Beijing relations reached a new height after the visit of their President Xi Jinping to Bangladesh in 2016.

About Dhaka-Beijing bilateral cooperation, Hasina mentioned that the construction work on Karnaphuli Tunnel in Chattogram is going on with Chinese support.

Knowing that a book on the China visits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be published, the Ambassador showed his country's interest to translate it into Chinese language.

In this regard, the Prime Minister urged the envoy to give the photographs on the visits of Bangabandhu, if they have any.

PM's Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman was present on the occasion.

An FE report adds: Chinese Ambassador Zhang Zuo has reiterated his country's support for resolving the Rohingya crisis.

The Chinese envoy informed Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen of his country's position on the issue during a meeting between them on Tuesday.

At the meeting, the Chinese envoy briefed the minister on his recent visit to the Rohingya camp, according to a media statement issued by the foreign ministry.

Ambassador Zhang Zuo stressed the importance of strengthening communication channels between Bangladesh and Myanmar for finding a solution to the Rohingya crisis.

Foreign Minister Abdul Momen sought China's support in convincing Myanmar to start taking back Rohingyas from Bangladesh at the earliest.

He said Bangladesh was ready to send back the Rohingyas who are on the verified list.

Foreign Minister Abdul Momen and Ambassador Zhang Zuo also shared their views on the role Myanmar should play to create a congenial atmosphere so that Rohingyas feel secured for their repatriation and resettlement in Rakhine state, the statement said.

The foreign minister requested the Chinese ambassador to redouble his efforts so that agreements and decisions reached at the leaders' summit in the past may be realized through speedy implementation process.

The Chinese ambassador assured the minister that he would take all-out efforts for speedy implementation of cooperation projects.
